Salve Desmo-dipendenti!

Renzo,
It turned out to be a bit more of a project than I expected, but I think it was worth it. Following is a summary of what was involved:
I think the 749 and 999 share many wheel and brake components. The wheels on my GT are from a 999, and I think most of the items I bought for the conversion were 999 parts, but I’m not sure if there is any difference.
- You need the rotors (brake discs) from the 999. They're 5-bolt, almost everything else is 6-bolt.
- I used the stock GT brake calipers in front by removing (milled by a machinist) about 1.5 mm from the mounting lugs to make them fit up right since the offset of the 999 brake rotors won't match the stock calipers. By doing that, I used the stock GT brake lines in front.
- Other than that, the front was easy since the axle diameter is the same and the stock GT bushings worked.
- The biggest problem with this conversion is the rear wheel axle size difference. You need to make a spacer to fit the 999 rear wheel. It uses a 30mm axle, the GT is 25mm. I got a 999 axle and had it shortened down to just go through the wheel, sprocket carrier, and caliper carrier, then had it bored for a close fit to the stock 25mm axle.
- You need the sprocket carrier, sprocket, caliper carrier and the caliper from the 999. I found this easier than trying to adapt the GT items. You can find good used items on ebay.
- To get the sprocket to line up with the chain correctly, you need to move the wheel over towards the chain by 2.5mm by having the bushing in the sprocket carrier machined in two places. I can explain this better if someone needs the info.
- I used the rear brake line (hose) from a 999.
- You need about 3-4mm (I think that number is right, I'm going from memory) of extra spacer between the caliper carrier and the swing arm. I found some washers to do the job.
I got almost everything I needed from e-bay. Let me know if you have any more specific questions.
Mel S.
